The club is working towards creating a public online presentation of the club’s memorabilia on the Victorian Collections website.
The recent local Government announcement of new Club rooms to be built for the Geelong Cycling Club adjacent to the crit track on Belmont Common was greeted with great enthusiasm. Thanks must go to those who spent a great deal of time on putting a submission together which has resulted in this terrific outcome. We will soon have a wonderful facility as ‘home’ to the many activities which the GCC run through the year. It will also be a great location to display and house the large collection of memorabilia which the club has accumulated since its inception. These items are currently stored in various locations and many of the pieces are deteriorating with age and lack of care. So in order to take advantage of our new premises (by next year anyway), it is now time to make a start on cataloguing and restoring our collection before it is too late.
With this in mind John (your president) and Helen attended the Victorian Collections workshop at the Melbourne Museum early in December. Victorian Collections is a project developed in partnership by Museum Victoria and Museums Australia (Victoria). It provides a free, easy-to-use online cataloguing system especially created for small collecting organisations throughout Victoria. It was especially developed for groups wanting to digitally catalogue their collections. All records are stored securely and permanently online.
Now that the inservice day has given us some training and enthusiasm to get started, we are hoping that some of you may be interested in volunteering some time to assist with creating a public online presentation of the club’s memorabilia on the Victorian collections website. Helen is happy to coordinate and train any volunteers in this project. Our first meeting will be on Thursday 23rd January at 7.30pm. If you are interested in helping out (no time is too small) or know of some relevant items of interest – please contact Helen on 0422064928 or John on 0409396486
