Road Racing Season Kick Off The 2014 Road Racing Season kicked off with the Waurn Ponds scratch race on Saturday. Great weather and solid numbers in each grade saw some good racing. The juniors welcomed a few new members to their ranks, a great testimony to the work done by Danni. Light winds saw bunch finishes in each grade, Mark Turnley taking out C Grade and potentially earning himself a grade promotion. Tony Butler used his finishing kick honed on the track over the summer to win B & Seb Wild taking a close victory in A grade. The season start will be on the 29th of March at Waurn Ponds. The Annual 20 that has always opened the road racing season and will now be held on the 3rd of May in lieu of the Hill Climbing championships in Lorne. Keep an eye on the event calendar on the web site for full event details.
President’s Report It is again my pleasure to present my President’s Report. A successful year is difficult to quantify however I shall attempt to justify my contention that we have indeed enjoyed pleasing progress across the full range of endeavours our Club pursues Juniors: Under the guidance of our Junior Co-Ordinator Danielle Bridger and supervision of Club Coaches, Craig McCartney (road) and Oliver King (track) our membership has continued to grow to near forty, in fact to a point where another Coach will be necessary to cope with numbers attending Tuesday training at Belmont Island. Particularly pleasing is the number of girls attending training and racing, still a distinct minority but a truly dramatic change in GCC experience. Women: Ever […]

Spring Handicap The final race of the road season was held on Saturday afternoon in warm and windy conditions. The smallest field of the road season turned out but riders were keen to take on the Parkers Road circuit without arm or leg warmers for a change. New rider Aaron Hickey showed the field a clean pair of heals leading from start to finish in a show of strength. After a spell from racing, Tim St Quentin showed he had been doing some work riding strongly for a second place finish. Paul Rettke coming home in 3rd place to cap off a great season. Fastest time going to up and coming rider Mark Kelly. Juniors raced over either 1 or […]
Photo courtesy of JXP Photography Congratulations to Nick Squillari on winning the Victorian Open Time Trial title in Bendigo last weekend. Nick won well, 25 seconds clear of Jason Spencer, of Blackburn, and Beijing Olympian, Tasmanian Mark Jamieson. “I am pretty stoked with this win”, Squillari said. “I am just so proud to win a title, especially in Victoria which has a strong cycling scene.” “I am an adopted Victorian, and to get a Viccy title is a terrific result”, said Squillari, who rides for the Joel Pearson-managed African Wildlife Safari team. Well done from all of the GCC. Peloton Cafe Read Nick’s blog entry on Peloton Cafe. Race results View the results from the ITT Open Road Championships […]
A surge in interest in junior cycling means the club is in need of a couple of bikes for junior training. These bikes will be used on a Tuesday afternoon at junior training by new comers wanting to give cycling a go. If you have a bike in good condition that isn’t being used that you can loan to the club, please contact junior coordinator Danni; firstname.lastname@example.org
Round 3 of the summer criterium series headed to Ocean Grove last Saturday evening. Conditions were ideal for racing and spectators who were on hand to enjoy some fast racing. Sixteen juniors hit the start line to kick racing off. They were able to put all their skills learnt on Tuesday evening training to good use around this fast circuit, cornering confidentially as large bunch. Riders were keen to test each other’s legs with many attacks off the front of the bunch. Well done to all. D grade followed the juniors with riders happy to work turns early in the race. The local milk truck halted proceedings midway though. Denise O’Loghlen was left to lament the break, claiming it had […]
