Ross Bush Memorial Handicap

SENIOR Sixty riders, eighty kilometers of racing, 600 meters of climbing, a large bunch finish, 0.023 seconds separating the first two riders, the 2015 Ross Bush Memorial Handicap was one hell of a race. The Annual race that honours the late Ross Bush who was tragically killed while out training 18 years ago was unusually raced in near perfect conditions, cool temperatures and light winds. A small but cooperative limit bunch got things underway, sharing the load and riding consistently over the first part of the race. Next back the 5th SCR (scratch) were working well together, 3rd SCR were flying and quickly picked up 4th SCR to form a super group. A hugely talented and well credentialed SCR bunch […]

Oliver Kent Spark Melbourne to Warrnambool Champion

Well done to Oliver Kent Spark who today wrote his name into the record books as the 2014 winner of the 99th Melbourne to Warrnambool  cycle classic. The Warrny is one of the oldest and longest at 273K races on the international calendar. Oliver’s name will be etched into the record books along side some of the greats of Australian and international cycling to have won the race. Oliver bypassed the recent NRS Tour of Tasmania to focus on this event. Using last weekends Ross Bush Memorial Handicap, where he claimed first and fastest as his final tune up for Warny Oliver took the win ahead of Commonwealth Games gold medalist Alex Edmonsond & last years winner Sam Horgon.  After the win […]

Victorian Masters & Junior Criterium Championships 2015

Geelong Cycling Club is pleased to announce that they have secured the rights to host the Victorian Masters & Junior Criterium Championships for the next 3 years starting in 2015. Securing these Championships is a significant achievement for GCC and a great show of faith from Cycling Victoria. The championships will be held on the popular Eastern Gardens circuit, with the first event at the end of March 2015. It represents a great opportunity for our members to compete on a familiar circuit for a major championship title. As with all events there is man power required to plan and run them. Presidents Report, July 2014

I am writing this report the evening following a visit to my friend Rory Wilson, 64 of Drysdale who is in the spinal unit of Melbourne’s Austin Hospital. A week ago Rory collided with the rear of a truck in Portarlington sustaining critical injuries resulting in the severing of his spinal chord leaving him a paraplegic. This has been a sobering, even confronting experience for everybody in Rory’s life.  In spite of Rory’s remarkable resilience there is no escaping the magnitude of the task ahead for the Wilson Family and I wish them the very best.Rory’s event is vanishingly rare in it’s outcome however it brings into stark relief the challenges facing cyclists on public roads and the responsibility we all accept for our own and […]

Race Report – Geelong/ Footscray Combine

REPORT FROM FOOTCRAY CYCLING CLUB:Geelong V Footscray Challenge Cup Graded Scratch Races, 12 July 2014.The Footscray and Geelong Cycling Clubs ventured out to chilly Meredith for the second in a two-race series for the 8th Annual Challenge Cup. Racing conditions started out cold but clear, but a little rain made the hilly circuit, and especially the fast, tight descent into Steiglitz, such a challenge that many riders did not make it to the finish. As in race one, only a few A-Graders turned up to race, and in direct contrast to race one’s Footscray cleanup, the A grade race turned into a Geelong whitewash, with 31 year old Geelong resident and noted gun bike mechanic Chris Fry taking the win. Fry […]
